Smashing Magazine have done it again by sponsoring and launching yet another wonderful WordPress theme dubbed Simply Ornate. It was designed by one Evan Eckard and sports patterns from his own pattern-loving site, DinPattern. The design is a combination of delacate intracacy with wonderful simplicity. Just found this beautiful set of tee vectors. Comes not only in .eps & .ai format, but also .png & .jpg. Perfect for showcasing any cool designs from photoshop as if they were on tees, or showing off some awesome tee designs.

I found this beautiful set of brushes today. Mainly conjoined skeletons, but with some conjoined figures too. It’s something a little different, a little special perhaps. The download on the deviantART page actually contained a zip file and brush file for each brush. For convenience I combined them into a single brush file which you can download here. Please note, these are not my brushes, and the original creator (linked via image) owns them.

This morning I was happy to remove our google analytics code from the headers of all our sites, in favor of the excellent, multi-domain and free stats program, FireStats. It became obvious yesterday that google analytics simply isn’t very good. With our article reaching out to over 8,000 people (confirmed via server-side stats) we had analytics telling us numbers from 6k right up to 15k. Not only that, but these incorrect numbers took until 4am today to update. And so, the advantages of FireStats:

1. It’s free. And self hosted. The only other decent self-hosted solution is Shaun Inmans Mint, which is great, unless you need it for many domains, when it becomes expensive.
2. It’s live. If you want the stats from three seconds ago, that’s fine, go ahead and check FireStats, because it’ll have them all lined up for you.
3. It’s more accurate. It doesn’t rely on javascript like google analytics, it uses pure php. This means any browsers visiting with javascript disabled are also counted.
4. It’s simple. I find google analytics overly-complicated. I’m not bothered with 90% of the panel. FireStats highlights whats important to me and thats the way I like it.
5. Lastly, it’s quick. Sometimes I notice a page taking forever to load, and I look to the status bar and all it says is “waiting for analytics.google.com”. Firestats has none of that, since it’s self-hosted.

So if your looking for an excellent stats program, with automatic integration into WordPress and a whole other bunch of CMS’s, check out FireStats.

The Coquette icon set comes in Window’s .ICO files, Mac .ICNS files and .PNG files for Linux and Online. These icons are free for personal use but you have to pay for commercial usage.

Smashing Magazine has once again teamed up with a designer to create and release for free some top quality icons! Introducing Smashy the Alien:

Elite by Design have released a very nice mac-themed icon set on their blog here. They can be downloaded from their deviantART page here. The set contains 100 icons, 50 with black backgrounds, and 50 with white backgrounds. Half of each 50 are 128×128px and the other half are 64×64px. All in all, a very nice set, well done!
