It’s that time of year again: the one where we look back at the trends and ideas which have developed, the good, the bad, the ugly. We analyse and reason, develop plans for the future and strategies to propel ourselves forwards in a greater manner than previously.

Blogs have grown massively in popularity and influence in the last year, and with more high quality blogs appearing, the competition for top place is stiff. Aside from content, marketing and networking, the design of a blog is key aspect to it’s success: the various sections have to be well layed out, it has to be great for search engines, it has to be easy to navigate and find things, the best content should be highlighted, there should be a wide arrange of feed/subscription offers, there needs to be a good balance of advertising to content and, of course, it needs to look nice. Most importantly however, the content needs to be great; content is king. All in all, I would say that creating a good blog is pretty damn hard.

So, let’s take a look at what works and what doesn’t, what techniques the big blogs make use of and why the little blogs aren’t getting bigger. We’ll be looking at all the above aspects, plus checking out some figures to see what’s popular in blogs.

Design, Layout & Positioning

Featured Articles. There have been many changes to design throughout 2008, the most prominent of which has been the ‘featured article’ trend. As blogs have grown increasingly popular, especially due to great content, many blogs are bringing the best of what they have to say to all frontpage viewers, while smaller, less important articles (despite being newer) often sit below. This system allows new people too view the quality of the blog immediately, while regular readers can skip right to the content below. However, only a blog with less feature updates, it can be hard to keep up the pace, as content soon becomes stagnant on the front page, and can lead to a loss of readership.

The ‘featured article’ has lead to a range of new design ideas and methods. Lets take a look at some examples:

Unique design, bold design. The age of the gradient-full, rounded-corner obsessed web2.0 design trend is over. Blogs are beginning to develop designs suited to their content and their readers, each hoping to give itself a ‘personality’. Particularly notable is the popularity of grunge and hand made elements:

Font mayhem. The use of fonts has changed drastically in the last year. They are used within all sorts of design elements now to create a range of effects. The use of sIFR has increased and as a result many blogs are using custom fonts/non-standard fonts for their titles:

Power of the List

The list has become mighty over the last year. In fact, I would say that a very large percentage of all popular posts are lists. I mean literal lists, here’s 25 awesome sites or 50 vintage themed links and designs. They’re popular because 1.they are easy to create, there’s nothing really original within them and 2.the readers like them because the blogger is basically taking any effort out of the subject they are looking for. Want to find out about blue-themed websites? Sure, just find a list of them.

We have list posts here on Resource Pile. Those ‘collection’ posts, they’re really lists of content we’ve found elsewhere. It’s fine though, because it’s good for the reader, the blog and the original author gaining popularity for their product/creation. Everybody wins. Here’s a list of what I think were the years best list-posts:

New Blogs, Big Blogs, Fast Growing Blogs

There have been tonnes of new blogs this year, and I’ve noticed them growing more than ever in the past few months:

Tools of the Trade

So how are all these blogs growing in popularity so quickly?

Social Media. As ever, Digg, Reddit, Slashdot, Sphinn, Design Float and all the other news voting sites have played an important role for blogs. Stumble Upon has also played an important role (despite being a different setup to the others). Over the year, I’ve learnt that the front-pagers on Digg tend to be the already-very-popular blogs, because their readers hit the integrated digg button and the traffic keeps on flowing. But what about the smaller blogs? I’ve seen many, many tweets about getting those all important 100 diggs, but despite achieving this (Resource Pile included) I have yet to see one be front-paged. Simply because the bigger blogs are dugg more often and faster. So how do the smaller blogs break the mould? Well, that’s where Design Float & the other smaller vote sites come in. Being aimed at a much smaller niche rather than everyone, the smaller vote sites can prove extremely successful for smaller blogs, with more in-depth categories and more dedicated viewers.

Twitter. Although this is really social media, Twitter deserves its own section. The ReTweet craze is here, we’re all tweeting and re-tweeting each others articles and blog posts, asking for stumbles, diggs, floats and the like. All while updating our normal status too. The great thing is that an ‘unwritten etiquette’ has developed amongst twitterers. We limit our shouts about blog posts to about once every 24 hours, and this works. It means people aren’t spammed with our link, but also gives great potential to the blog post (because as one retweets, others retweet the retweet, and so on).

Advertising

The main change in advertising this year has been with BuySellAds. Many, many blogs have begun to use them, huge blogs like the TUTS networks right down to far, far smaller blogs. The simple grey box with dark outline and text “Advertise Here” is instantly recognizable as a BSA website. The most commonly used ad format is the trusty 125px button ad. A lot of blogs have also begun to sell tiny, cheap ‘favicon ads’ on their pages, these often fall underneath the other adverts. As usual, the big name blogs have kept advertising in-house to maximize profits, no big changes there.

Conclusion

So there it is, a year of blogging. A year of massive change and development within the blog-o-sphere, and hopefully changes will continue throughout the year 2009, as blogs grow, develop new ideas, new designs and new identities. Happy New Year!

The image speaks a thousand words and a thousand more. Everything about it: the idea, the image, the detail, the final piece, is perfect. I cannot find a single flaw within his work. I first found Alexius via his deviantArt page.

That long, triangular ended rectangle with two ‘points’. Pretty much an identical design element, directly ripped. The login ‘box’ top right is very similar in style too and the main content area is, but that’s OK. I can see MephoBox has simply been inspired by Pattern Taps design. Then I read the content.

You see, Pattern Tap is a collection of lovely design elements, cool footers, beautiful headers and creative sidebars. Users login, they take screenshots of various sections of websites, post them collect them and generally get inspired. The strange thing is, this is exactly what you do on MephoBox. The two ideas behind the sites are identical, and there’s no possible way this could have been a mistake, could it?

Unless this is just a big joke, MephoBox = Pattern Tap, and Pattern Tap came first. So MephoBox is a complete and utter 100% copy. Avoid it, use Pattern Tap.

After a long period of waiting, WordPress 2.7 is here, and I couldn’t be more happy. After just 10 minutes, I’ve fallen back in love with WordPress, it’s completely rejuvinated the entire system. Anyway, lets take a look at some of the awesome features and changes which have arrived for us:

The Dashboard

The new dashboard is like a work of art. The “Right Now” section is perfect, highlighting all the info which was previously slapped in a single line of letters, words and other mumble jumble. The Quickpress feature I have yet to use, but I can see it being immensely useful in the future, especially for our individual resources. The rest of the content is pretty standard fare, but it’s all organized well and you can drag bits around.

The Write Page/Edit Template Page

It’s wider! Finally, a large area to edit content, content is, once again, king. It generally makes writing easier, and the right sidebar has all the info you really need to create a post. Below the writing area is the less-used stuff, custom fields, custom excerpt, trackbacks and so on.

Plugins

The plugins system has had a massive upgrade. No more uploading, using FTP to delete or upgrade, oh on. Not only can we upgrade like before, we can install new plugins, browse for them, delete old ones, reinstall them, edit them. Pretty much anything you can think of, we can now do it all from the one panel. Wonderful.

Automatic Upgrade

It took a long time, and there was a plugin which did it for us, but automatic upgrade is now built into the WP system! Although I haven’t been able to test it, I hope that it’s a lot quicker than the slow “click here for next task” method of the plugin (not that I blame them, it was probably safer/better that way as a plugin).

Overall

The overall upgrade is beautiful. The design is perfect, it’s simple, functional and just works. Essentially what’s happened is that now, for the first time ever, WordPress has become an all in one panel. Once installed you can do almost everything through the panel. What is missing? Automatic installation of themes is. It should be possible, and I’d probably expect such a feature at some point in the future.

What sucks?

Sadly, there are still a couple of bad things about WordPress as a whole:

WYSIWYG editor is still tinyMCE. It simply doesn’t work well. Writing this post was a chore, I ended up using the HTML editor because it simply won’t format everything neatly.

As part of the editor, image uploads still put in a width and height attribute, even on “full size”. Yes, the attributes may be equal to the images size, but on a design like this, we need images to be flexible, and adding these attributes simply means we then have to remove them.

Again, tied to the last point, the image uploader. The flash uploader no longer seems to work for me, and I’m using the old browser one. Which is fine, it’s just a little error or something.

So, go download WordPress 2.7 and enjoy the benefits, they easily outweigh the minor problems.

Graphic design has evolved thanks to the internet and it has been taken from the artist basement to everybody’s screen. But as it happens with computer sciences, graphic design is a very wide concept nowadays: web-site designers, design in advertising, cartoonists, illustrators, etc. But what about real old-fashioned artists? Sometimes I wonder what would happen if Salvador Dalí or Vincent Van Gogh would do if they were born in this digital era. Maybe there is some Leonardo Da Vinci out there, who knows?

As both artist and music addict myself, I often pay close attention to CD artwork, where imagination goes beyond the standards. This aspect of graphic design often gives a concept to the artist, and he is able to approach that concept from his own style, since it is style what defines each artist: there is some point of recognition each time you pick up a CD whose cover has been made by an artist that you like. You can tell it is from that artist.

I would like to dedicate some of my work here at Resource Pile to review some of the greatest artists in this area. Since there are many, feel free to suggest or recommend your own favorites, we could compile a good point of inspirational resource here.

Before going deeper into each style and artist, a few names and some overview of what is yet to come:

Dave McKean: He’s worked for Testament, Dream Theater, Counting Crows or Tori Amos. Take a look:

Derek Riggs: Remember the 80s? Remember the old british heavy metal band Iron Maiden? Remember Eddie, their mascot? Derek Riggs was the artist behind the vast majority of Iron Maiden’s artwork. And there were no computers back then, it was all hand-made!! The first CD cover that impressed me when I was a kid was this one:

Niklas Sundin: Independent artists are my favorites. This swedish artist/musician has brought the darkness in images, he has done several projects for extreme metal bands (Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates), with pretty nice results. Very imaginative and original:

This is just some of the fantastic artwork you can find out there. I would like to approach each artist and style individually, since each one inspires our creative instincts in different ways. Again, if you want to recommend or suggest your favorite artists, do not hesitate.

Thanks for reading. Until next time, design consciously.

Hello, everyone

I have recently joined Resource Pile as a new crew member, and I would like to drop some lines as an introduction for my forthcoming work as a writer here.

I don’t want you to get bored and stop reading, so I will put it in form of a dialogue. And as an artist myself, I have a very subtle and uncomprehensible sense of humor, so bear with me ;)

Who are you?

My nickname is Solinger, a graphic designer/artist and cartoonist. I work professionally in many areas of design, but I specialize in custom and creative design as mascots/toons for different brands and companies. Do you want to see how I look? I made a self portrait some time ago:

(Note: This might be me. It might not be me as well.)

You’re quite ugly, but I’m interested in what you do. Can I see your work?

No, it’s top secret govern-related work, if I tell you, they would kill me. I mean, yeah, take a look to some of my early work, as I’ve been working mostly offline for local enterprises, I’m migrating contents to my new online profile: http://solingerportfolio.wordpress.com

What is your purpose behind Resource Pile?

That one is easy. I will be reviewing anything related to graphic design in its most artistic sense, as a contribution to the splendid work you’ve got already here.

What do you mean with “artistic sense”? The Mona Lisa and stuff?

Uhmm, not exactly. By artistic sense I mean creativity as a self-fulfilling goal. I said this to look cultivated, but I don’t really know what it means. In simple words: I will focus on artistic and inspirational side of graphic design, like illustration or cartoon-like design.

I see. And what will I obtain from this?

You will be way cooler than you are right now. Aside from that, you will get in touch with the work of very different artists and styles, and even more: you will have access to tutorials and lessons from those artists themselves. Gathering all that information together and delivering it to you will be both my mission and reward.

You said you would pay me for asking you questions like these. Are we done now? Where’s my money?

Errr… shhhh!!! We will work it out afterwards, keep asking.

Uhmm… how regularly will you be posting at Resource Pile?

Good boy, I like this question. Well, I will try to be as regular as possible, but my outcome as a writer will depend on the relevance of the information I have to write about. I won’t write anything that doesn’t provide some quality to our readers.

How did you get involved in Resource Pile in the first place?

Well, the great minds behind Resource Pile were in need of someone to add as a counterpoint to their extensive and magnificent work. They found nobody, so they ended up asking me.

Nah, just kidding. As a graphic designer oriented to an artistic side, I was interested in being that counterpoint and offer Resource Pile a new strong pillar, and fulfill my need of verbal self expression.

Seems like a good deal. Am I going to get paid or what?

Here, take the money and run. I hope we made it clear to our readers, if someone complains, I will give your e-mail address…

Digital times haven’t swallowed up old-style cartoonists, there’s room for everyone within the digital art world. Scott Johnson is a fantastic artist and cartoonist who brings around the geek culture throughout his extralife.

Nowadays, Scott offers quite a wide range of inspirational and educational material: from podcasts to video-lessons of his design techniques. But he started off as a humble cartoonist who came up with a web-comic three times a week. Today, I would like to analyze his style and evolution over the years, this would be a good resource for all those cartoonist wannabees out there.

This is the first web-comic published in myextralife.com:

Here, you can observe shadows made directly with the pencil (i.e: black lines over the couch). The background scenarios lack of detail, coloring looks flat although an effort of spreading different shades of color is already present.

Back to present day. His strips have improved substantially:

As you can see, his skills have improved dramatically over time. However, there are things that remain (thankfully) unchanged, like his hand-made style, his expressive faces and ellanged proportions. It is his technique what has been polished and reached totally new levels of quality.

Notice that he keeps showing the big, prominent expressions in order to give the sensation of animation. The coloring here is pretty good, he uses textured color for the characters, which provides a sensation of depth to the eye. Shadows are basically stronger shades of the same color applied over the design, no black lines over the forms anymore. Now the dialogues are more consistent and defined, they take the place they diserve on the composition, clearly readable and part of the inside joke.

Background scenarios are kept simple, provided that he has to deliver a new strip three times a week, but colors and scenes are more harmonic now, pastel colors and geometric forms do the trick. Also, observe how nicely done is the inclined perspective that he uses in here:

Quite different from the frontal perspective that he used to apply in the early days, uh?

Scott has a polished and fast technique that brings to the internet the old Tex Avery spirit, hand-made cartoons for all ages. His main subjects are videogames (he is well known World of Warcraft player) and geek culture. You can also suscribe to his blog, where he reviews whatever that crosses his mind (or his eye, for that matter).

Also, if you are interested in watching his methods, look for “Diary of a Cartoonist” in YouTube, he has several video-lessons to show how he does his art. Here it goes the one where he explains expressions:

That’s all for now. Until next time, draw consciously. ;)

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to Resource Pile version 2.0. Upon first inspection you’ll notice just the new design, we went for very minimalist, content focussed design this time. But why? Basically, the previous design didn’t work. While the idea behind it was a nice idea, to have multiple ‘content streams’, each separated into their own sections, it never worked in practice. The site became too fragmented, as did the wide array of feed options. Not only this, but the manual feed customization tool didn’t always work, and had issues, although I’m still planning on making a WP plugin out of this, but a lot more advanced.

We used to have: features, resources, inspiration & asides. Now we have basically one section, which is split into a group of categories which you can see at the top of each page. Generally this can be cosidered features and resources. Why no inspiration or asides? Well, inspiration isn’t needed really, because there are plenty of CSS galleries out there. And asides were just a waste of time, because all the great content can easily be found via sites built for finding new content, aka Digg & Design Float.

You will notice we still have an inspiration category, we will be running much deeper inspiration posts via this.

So, what’s actually new?

Apart from the design, our focus at Resource Pile is changing. We want to bring you more features, more content you care about, but less often. We’ll still have resources, because that’s essentially the point of Resource Pile, but we’ll be having more and more collections of icons, brushes and websites. More posts on inspiration from both digital and traditional art forms and more articles, including a marketing series.

We now have a Twitter account, so if you don’t like RSS subscription, but still want notifications, go follow Resource Pile on Twitter.

We also have only one feed now, which is our resources and features together. No small asides or inspiration however, only good content you actually care about. As well as this there is now an email subscription link, something we neglected until now.

Lastly, we have a more meaningful footer, specifically in two ways. One thing is that you can now contribute to Resource Pile, send in a resource, write a post, anything. If you’re launching a new site, tell us, and we’ll link you if it’s good. The other thing is a nice space for ‘friends’, non sponsored ‘ads’ for other blogs we like and might exchange links with. If you’re interested in adding your blog, contact us about it.

So there it is…

That’s Resource Pile version 2.0, currently all you’ve seen is the design change, feed change, twitter account and other little bits. New and improved content is coming soon. I hope with our revamped Resource Pile we can expand further than we have so far. Oh, there’s going to be more freebies too :)
